Beautiful Cape Neddick "Nubble" Light is planted on a small rocky island that is 'so close yet so far' from the shore divided by a 100 foot channel. The vivid contrasting autumn light and shadows delivered the depth and dimension for the rock foundation I was seeking, but I added a soft delicate blueish shadow on the tower and the keeper's house. Three seagulls sat immovable atop the red brick oil house so I felt obliged to use them in my composition. My wife Erin chuckled as I recounted the true story of the keeper's cat "Mr T". In the 1930's the cat would regularly swim and ride a wave to shore to hunt for mice in the nearby rocks. To create a further sense of distance, I used a quaint green-tinted sky along with high- altitude streaking clouds to complete the background.

With an irregular (artwork) edge this art print does not require matting. Celebrate the beauty and spirit of your favorite Maine lighthouse, perfect for your home or office. Available in 18" x 24" (standard frame size) or the Grand View size of 36" x 53". Conceived, created and printed in Maine.

• A rock formation which bares a remarkable profile of George Washington exists on the Northern end of the island.

• In 1967 the keeper's young son went to school on the mainland by sitting in a bucket and was hauled back and forth across the channel every day -(see the bucket image 3.) One day a local artist depicted the scene in a painting. The painting won first prize and received recognition. An admiral saw a newspaper article on the painting and immediately ordered the keeper to cease using the bucket for human transportation.
